How to Patent an Idea in Ireland
- 1). You must provide an application for a patent as a request for the grant of a patent. Go to www.patentsoffice.ie/en/patents_apply.aspx, as this will bring you to the Irish Patent Office website. Click the "Patent Application Form No 1" to download and fill out the application.

For those who wish to file a patent application directly to the patent office, you can click the "Patent Application Guide" on how complete Patent Application Form No 1 as well as how to include a description section, a claims section, a drawings section, and/or an abstract section.
- 3). Specifications for the descriptions, claims, drawings, and/or abstract sections should be typed or printed on single sided A4 pages with margins of two to three centimeters. Remember to number each page and provide two copies of the documents when submitting it to the Irish Patent Office.
- 4). In the specifications document it should include the title, the description of the invention, claims (which describe and define the scope of the invention and the legal protection confirmed by the patent if granted), and any drawings (which are not necessary if it does not apply to the patent, though drawings are said to be useful in clarifying the nature of the invention), and finally an abstract. The abstract should be typed in a separate sheet of A4 paper and should start with the title of the invention, concisely summarizing the invention in 150 words or less. Remember to include the essential features of your invention.
- 5). There will be a fee to file with the patent office, depending on your type of patent.
