- 1). Download and print off form OL 16 from the California Department of Motor Vehicles website. Form OL 16 is the official driving instructor's renewal form.
- 2). Fill out your copy of form OL 16 with all of your personal information. This will include your name and contact information, your current instructor's permit license number and information about the company you work for.
- 3). Write a personal check or get a money order for the amount of $30 addressed to the California Department of Motor Vehicles. This is the non-refundable application fee required to process your permit renewal application.
- 4). Put your check and application in an envelope and mail it to:

This must be postmarked by the date your current permit is set to expire. This date is listed on your current permit. - 5). Go to a California Department of Motor Vehicles location and take the written instructor's permit exam. This exam can be taken at any DMV location in California. This is the same test you took when you originally got your instructor's permit. Upon the passing of your written test and the processing of your application, your permit will be renewed.
