    Registering Your Vehicle

    • In order to register your motor vehicle in North Carolina, you will need to bring proof that it is covered by liability insurance to your local Division of Motor Vehicles office in addition to the bill of sale. State law requires all vehicles to be covered by liability insurance. After you have registered your vehicle, you will receive a license plate and two validation stickers that you will need to put on the plate that show the month and year the registration expires.

    Personalized Plates

    • Personalized license plates cost North Carolina drivers an additional $30. You must order your plate from the Division of Motor Vehicles, which will let you know if the personalization is acceptable. As long as the personalization is not deemed offensive or already in use by another driver, it should be accepted by the DMV.

    Specialized Plates

    • You can promote your special cause--including military service, children's issues, and your college Alma mater--with more than 100 types of specialized license plates that are available in North Carolina. A special antique plate is available for vehicles that are at least 35 years old or older.
