About the Green Card

104 30

    Types

    • There is only one national form of the green card, but the information displayed varies, similar to the different restrictions and types of driver's licenses available. For instance, a conditional LPR will receive a green card that is valid for two years and he must remove the conditions before the card expires in order to receive a regular LPR card.

    Significance

    • Green card holders are not U.S. citizens. As such, when traveling, LPRs must present their green cards as well as valid non U.S. passports. If you are a LPR, you cannot vote in any U.S. local, state or federal election. Furthermore, green card holders are required to reside on U.S. land for at least six months of every year.

    TIme Frame

    • Regular green or LPR cards are valid for 10 years. You can submit a renewal application no earlier than 90 days prior to your current card's expiration.

    Considerations

    • Rules vary concerning when LPRs can begin the process to become U.S. citizens. If you obtained a green card through marriage, you must wait three years and remain married to the same person who sponsored you. Most individuals are eligible five years after they are granted LPR status.

    Benefits

    • Green card holders can file petitions to sponsor their spouses and children. Please consult an immigration attorney before submitting any petitions as mistakes can create consequences, such as long-term delays or denial of benefits.
