- 1). Determine your eligibility status and route toward immigration. An intending immigrant may apply for permanent residency as a refugee by seeking political asylum, through a work visa or by marriage to a U.S. citizen. If necessary, consult with an immigration attorney to discuss the particulars of your situation.
- 2). Fill out all applicable USCIS forms and copies of all required supporting documentation. When applying for permanent residency, the applicant will file the Application to Register Permanent Residence (Form I-485), and mandatory supporting forms including, Biographical Data form (Form G-325A); Medical Examination form (Form I-693); the Affidavit of Support (Form I-864) and Application for Employment Authorization (Form I-765). - 3). Attach the application fee. This fee will vary depending on the forms you submit in your completed application package. For example, the DHS charges a $930 fee, plus a background check fee of $80 for fingerprinting. For example, if married to a U.S. citizen, bring along your wedding album, program and receipts showing dates and payment of your wedding day items.
- 8). Wait for official notification in the mail of the USCIS intention to grant you permanent residency. Then, wait for your green card in the mail.
