How to Become a BOCES Teacher
- 1). Visit your local BOCES office or website for your particular school district fill out the teacher certification application. Select the appropriate category, subject area and grade level for your qualifications. Choose a subject area, such as general math or science, and select a grade level depending on the age of school children that you wish to teach. For example: grades one through six are considered to be in childhood age category, while grades seven through 12 are considered adolescent.
- 2). Fill out the application, including specifics on age, gender, education, employment history, references and salary. Mail or provide supporting documentation such as official transcripts, test scores from CLEP, DANTE, ACTFL or excelsior exams, teaching certificates, professional licenses and documentation of paid teaching experience.
- 3). Register and complete the New York State Teacher Certification Examination. Provide the test scores as a part of your application. Double-check all application items for accuracy and completeness before submitting all materials.
- 4). Pay the BOCES teacher certification application fee online or through postal mail. Ask for confirmation that your application was received and follow-up if you haven’t heard from your local BOCES office within two weeks.
