    • 1). Sand the car down using a dual action sander and 80 grit sandpaper. This removes any peeling paint and the top layers of the old paint and primer. Clean the sanding dust off the car and wipe the surface with wax and grease remover.

    • 2). Cover any areas that won't be painted with masking tape and paper. Cover the lights, chrome trim, mirrors, glass, door handles, grille and tires with paper and tape.

    • 3). Spray a thin coat of primer on the car. Wait 30 minutes and spray another thin coat. Allow the primer to dry completely and then sand it with 120 grit sandpaper and a sanding block. This smoothes the car and shows any small dings or dents. Fill these areas with body filler and cover them in primer. Sand again with 120 grit sandpaper to make sure they are now smooth. Wipe the car with wax and grease remover.

    • 4). Spray the car with three or four thin coats of paint. Use horizontal back and forth movements, overlapping each stroke. Start on the roof and move to the hood and trunk and then the sides of the car. Work from the front of the car to the rear. Allow each coat to dry for 30 minutes before applying the next one.

    • 5). Cover the car with four thin coats of clearcoat paint. Allow 30 minutes for the paint to dry between coats. Allow 24 hours for the car to dry completely. Once the clearcoat has dried, remove all masking tape and paper.
