The Moscone Center, San Francisco's huge downtown convention center covers 20 acres with more than 20 million square feet of exhibition space, meeting rooms, auditoriums and ballrooms. Built in three phases, it has hosted more than a million attendees a year since the third section, Moscone West, opened in 2003. According to the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau, more than 20,000 hotel rooms are within walking distance of the center. - The St. Regis San Francisco is a five-star, executive-type hotel next to the Museum of Modern Art and just a few hundred yards along 3rd Street from the Moscone Center North and South. The hotel has 260 luxury rooms, all with over-sized beds, large soaking tubs, rain showers and what the hotel itself refers to as "fainting sofas" but which look like glamorous chaises longues. Window seats and vestibules with leather textured walls are also standard features. In addition, the hotel has 46 suites, ranging in size from 700 to 3,200 square feet. One of this hotel's most unusual features is the Museum of the African Diaspora, which occupies the first three floors of the St. Regis tower.
- Directly across the street from the convention center, the W San Francisco is convenient for Moscone North and South. Part of a group of self-described "chic boutique" hotels, the W does not hide its light under the proverbial bushel; accommodation categories for the trendily furnished rooms are named "Wonderful Rooms," "Spectacular Rooms," "Cool Corner Rooms" and "Fabulous Rooms." The 404-room hotel also has "Fantastic" and "Extreme Wow" suites. Standard room features include a free "Munchie Box" and Bliss Spa toiletries. Rooms are pet-friendly -- with bedding, bowls and turndown gifts for dogs, litter boxes and scoops for cats -- however a steep cleaning fee -- $100 in 2010 -- is added to the bill for pet owners.
- A 32-story glass tower, the InterContinental San Francisco is close to the South of Market (SoMa) area and adjacent to Moscone West, the newest of the convention center buildings. Promoting itself as a convention hotel, it can provide meeting and event space for groups of up to 1,000. The hotel has 550 rooms and 14 luxury suites, all with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. The InterContinental caters to international business guests with 24-hour facilities including a fully-equipped business center with secretarial services and a 24-hour fitness center with a full-length lap pool. It also offers on-site, city center parking for overnight guests.
