- 1). Ready the area of your lawn where you want to plant the garden in early to mid-spring once the ground has thawed. Decide on the plot of land where you want to plant the garden, dig up the soil over the entire area to a depth of approximately eight inches, and break the soil up by slicing it apart with the tip or side of the shovel until the soil has a fine, powdery consistency.
- 2). Spread approximately two inches of fertilizer or compost over the prepared soil and use the shovel to push the fertilizer or compost down into the soil; mix it in thoroughly with the soil. If the soil in the region where you live is clay, or if you have ever experienced drainage problems on that area of your land, spread a one-inch layer of sawdust over the soil as well and mix it down into the soil just as you did the fertilizer or compost.
- 3). Begin planting your garden in mid to late spring when all frosts have passed. This is dependent on where you live in the south. The further to the south you live, the earlier you can generally begin planting the garden. Consult your seed packets to see the best planting times recommended by the producer to get help with your planting dates and to make sure that you don't mistakenly plant a fall vegetable too early in the year.
- 4). Make a hole for every seed that you want to plant that is roughly six times as wide as the seed and approximately three times as deep. Lay the seed in the hole that you created for it, push the soil back over the seed; press lightly to pack the seed in place. If you want to begin your garden from seedlings, dig a hole for each seedling that is big enough for the plant's rootball; place the rootball in the hole and pack the soil around the rootball.
- 5). Water the garden immediately after you plant your seeds and seedlings and keep your garden moist at all times. In the south, your garden will likely require several waterings per day to keep the ground moist. If you cannot meet this need manually, consider installing a sprinkler or irrigation system.
