    • 1). Evaluate the space in your garden. Choose a sunny, dry area for planting your herbs. Plan to plant the thyme in your garden when the weather is warm.

    • 2). Purchase small thyme plants at a local nursery based on the space in your garden. Select compact plants that are not too tall. Use your sense of smell to determine which culinary variety will meet your needs. The plants should look green and healthy. Obtain any other gardening supplies on the list you do not already have.

    • 3). Put on the gardening gloves. Prepare the soil by digging down with the spading fork and breaking up the soil. Use the spading fork to open up the soil. Mix in the fertilizer with the shovel.

    • 4). Dig holes with the garden trowel. The trowel is ideal for soil leveling and digging small holes. Space holes six inches apart and approximately four to six inches deep. The spacing is necessary, because many varieties of thyme have a tendency to fill in and spread out during growth.

    • 5). Plant the root divisions in the soil. Using the garden trowel, cover with a light layer of soil. Starting with root divisions is ideal, and it will take only around three months until you can harvest the thyme.

    • 6). Water the plants several times a week with the watering can. Always remember that thyme needs a nominal amount of water to flourish in a garden. It is a hearty plant that survives well during periods of drought. In the winter, protect the roots by keeping them dry.

    • 7). Prune the thyme in your garden with garden shears twice a year. Perform the pruning during the growing season. It is best to prune the plants right after the flowers are totally done blooming. Remove the heads of dead flowers, and perform some shaping with shears. Prune again a month before the first autumn frost.
