How to Remove an Oil Tank in Massachusetts
- 1). Contact one or more licensed contractors in your area. Your oil company, local chamber of commerce or the Massachusetts Oilheat Council may provide recommendations.
- 2). Make sure the contractors whose services you are considering are licensed and insured. They will provide that information upon request and it is usually mentioned in any advertisements they place.
- 3). Request estimates from each contractor you are considering. Compare estimates, double-check references, and sign a contract.
- 4). Observe the removal process from a safe distance, while taking notes and photos. In the event the contractor reports a problem or leak to you, make sure you report it to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
- 5). Have the tank removal contractor or an environmental consultant perform the required measurement of environmental contamination within 24 hours of removal of the tank.
