During numerous route-clearing missions in the dangerous Pech and Konar valleys, her engineer platoon was hit at least 30 times with direct-fire engagements, indirect fire or improvised explosive devices.


Army Reaches Out After California Recruiting Scam
A week after a fake Army recruiter was arrested for scamming Chinese immigrants into paying to join a bogus unit, real Army officials said they have been reaching out to Los Angeles area communities to prevent others from being duped, according to an Army Times article.

Authorities said they arrested Yupeng Deng last week after he persuaded about 100 immigrants into paying him as much as $400 each for the privilege of signing up. Deng, who also goes by the name David, was arrested on charges of obtaining money, labor or property under false pretenses, manufacturing and selling phony identification documents and using a counterfeit seal. He is being held on $500,000 bail and is set to be arraigned May 2.

Libyans to Allow Humanitarian Aid Into Misrata
Moammar Gadhafi’s government has promised the U.N. access to the besieged rebel city of Misrata, a senior U.N. official said Monday, as Libyan government troops continued to attack Misrata with shells and rockets, according to an Army Times publication.

However, the Libyan authorities have not guaranteed a halt of hostilities during such a mission, said the U.N.’s humanitarian chief, Valerie Amos, who met with the Libyan prime minister in the capital of Tripoli on Sunday.

Report: Coast Guard Unprepared for Oil Spill
An independent review panel has found that the Coast Guard’s response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill was well-executed but that the service was unprepared for the enormity of the incident because its focus had been diverted from environmental protection in recent years, according to a Navy Times story.

The panel — the Incident Specific Preparedness Review, made up of retired Coast Guard flag officers and government officials — said the response system worked well overall but found that the service could have prevented the situation from growing worse by focusing on oil spill preparedness before the fact.

Destroyer Radford to Become Reef off Md. Coast
A former Navy destroyer will soon be sunk off the Maryland coast to serve as a fish-attracting artificial reef, according to a Navy Times article.

The Arthur W. Radford, a 563-foot vessel, will be sunk in about 130 feet of water in an area about 28 miles northeast of the Ocean City Inlet. The ship will serve as the largest artificial reef to be planted on the East Coast to date, according to Monty Hawkins, chairman of the Maryland Artificial Reef Committee.
