• As an evergreen, boxwood joins the varieties of shrubs that provide privacy and structure in gardens. Boxwood is used in much the same way as yew, cherry laurel and holly.
  
  

Difference

• One difference the gardener must understand about boxwood is that, unlike many shrubby evergreens, boxwood is not an acid-loving plant. The ideal pH for boxwood is 6.5 to 7.2 -- neutral to slightly alkaline. Acidic soils should be modified with dolomite lime to neutralize pH.
  
  

Uses

• Boxwood is a popular foundation plant that grows well near the house if given well-drained soil and good air circulation. Boxwood can make a thick, evergreen hedge to provide privacy. Boxwood bushes are often used to anchor the end of a walkway -- a kind of evergreen doorway to the garden.
