Your Guide to RVing Overseas

106 36

There comes a time when RVers get an urge to break ties with their comfort zone and really try something new. For some folks, this may mean crossing state lines or even national borders but that may even not be enough.

To really break out, you need to completely leave your continent and trying RVing overseas. This may seem like a lot to take on but if you do your homework you may have the best time of your life.

I have some advice on RVing overseas to get you a start on your new adventure.

Having Your Papers in Order

You can avoid many hassles at customs and borders if you have the right information and papers. Required licenses and papers vary by country but there are some items you should always take with you when visiting a foreign country.
  • US Passport
  • Valid driver’s license
  • International credit card
  • Auto insurance for the country you’ll be traveling to
  • List of items to declare
  • Itinerary for travels, including locations, dates, and reasons.
  • Travel visa

For more information on the respective country or countries you’ll be visiting, head over to the Secretary of State’s Travel page.

International RV Clubs

As far as finding an appropriate travel trailer or motorhome we recommend getting in touch with international RV clubs. These Caravan Clubs are scattered throughout the world and concentrated in more countries where RVing is a popular past time, like the United Kingdom or New Zealand. The clubs are made up of passionate RVers who want other RVers to experience their country the right way.

You can even take part in international rallies to be part of support group that can take you to the best sights and sounds of their respective country.

The clubs will vary by country. but some of my favorites are the International Caravanning Association, Motorhome Holiday Swap and UK Motorhomes. Spend some time on RV forums and find a fellow RVer who has used one of these RV swap groups to get a first-hand account of the experience and tips and tricks to make the process a breeze. Finding another RVer who has done it can be one of your most indispensable resources.

Finding RV Parks and Grounds

Unfortunately, many of the more popular RV discounts clubs, such as Escapees or Good Sam RV Club will be of no use to you once you leave North America. While these are always great resources it won’t be the end of your trip.

This is when RV forums and the internet in general can be excellent tools. Use the Internet and forums to find the best campgrounds and sites. Try starting with broad searches such as RV Parks New Zealand, to get general information before narrowing your search down with queries such as, Auckland RV parks with laundry. Testing different search methods and refining your search techniques can make finding anything on the internet quite simple.

To best sum up this article is to say proper preparation prevents poor performance. RVing overseas takes a good deal of research, planning and homework. There will be winging it. The positive side is that RVing overseas can you leave you with a unique and memorable experience that you just can’t recreate close to home.
