    Navigation Aids

    • When traveling across the country as many people do in motor homes, it's always best to have some means of navigation. Invest in a global positioning system and learn how to use it before leaving home, or obtain a comprehensive road atlas. The type that truckers use, known as a motor carrier's atlas, is particularly handy with laminated pages that wipe clean after spills and a spiral binding for easy access to every page. The motor carrier's atlas also shows low bridges and the location of weigh stations, which are important for owners of large model motor homes.

    First Aid Preparedness

    • When traveling in a motor home, you may be miles away from a medical treatment facility when an accident happens. Ensure that you can treat minor medical emergencies by having a first aid kit on hand. Gauze, adhesive tape, bandages of various sizes, splints, alcohol wipes and antibiotic ointment are just some of the items your kit should include. Pick up a comprehensive first aid manual as well, if you are in doubt of how to treat the common emergencies you may encounter.

    Motor Home Equipment

    • While you can really go crazy buying accessories and gadgets to make life in your motor home easier and more convenient, there are some basics no motor home should be without. A set of wheel chocks to ensure that your recreational vehicle stays put when you park it are essential. Sewer hookups, hoses and disposable gloves are must-haves for those dirty jobs. Electrical and cable television hookups are helpful as well, when parking in spots that offer these amenities.

    Safety Items

    • While proper maintenance and regular care of your motor home will prevent many breakdowns, you never know when an unexpected problem may occur. Ensure that you have reflective signs or triangles, road flares and a fire extinguisher and that you know how to use them. A CB radio is a good option as well. Even if you're not comfortable talking on the air, you can always turn it on to tune in to the latest dirt about traffic jams, road detours and points of interest.
