How to Make a Bamboo Garden Trellis
- 1). Prepare the areas you want to place your trellis or trellises, if you are constructing more than one. Plants vary in their requirements for sun and shade as well as soil quality and type, so prepare your soil with appropriate amendments and choose a spot with adequate light.
- 2). Lay some of the bamboo out in the spot you've chosen to help you visualize the size of the area you will need. Measure the base of the trellis and make an "X" mark on the dirt around the area where you wish to build the first trellis.
- 3). Drive one of the pieces of bamboo 2 feet into the ground with a hammer or post hole digger. For a taller trellis, use 6-foot tall bamboo. Mark a spot 2 feet from the bottom of your bamboo pole with a pencil so that the poles end up at even lengths above the ground. Select equidistant spots for the second and third poles and drive them in to the pencil line. Drive in more poles depending on the size of your plant.
- 4). Gather all three bamboo poles about 3 inches down from the top of the poles. Tie a loose loop around one of the poles with the free end of the hemp. Holding the tops of the bamboo together, tightly weave the hemp in and out of each pole three times. Wind the jute around the outside of the bamboo stalks three times. Continue to work your way down the bamboo poles without cutting the hemp rope until you’ve tied them together around 4 inches down from the tops.
- 5). Tie a double knot to close the hemp that you tied around the poles. Cut the hemp as close to the knot as possible. Your trellis should look like a tripod. Now all it needs is a plant to support.
