How to Install a Sears Water Softener

    • 1). Solder the two copper stubs to the ¾-inch copper risers (these come with your softener) using a soldering iron, ¾-inch sweat couplings and lead-free solder. Attach the 1/2-inch plastic tube to the valve drain fitting and the overflow fitting on the side of the brine tank. Connect them to a floor drain and secure with plastic clips to the drain covering.

    • 2). Attach the bypass valve to the head of the water softener. Insert the O-ring stubs into the inlet and outlet fittings on the water softener, and snap the plastic clips in place. Connect and tighten the riser stubs with the nuts and a pair of pliers.

    • 3). Splice the plastic bypass valve into the system and secure it with the hose clamps that came with the softener. Install a copper wire bridge above the plastic bypass using the piers and a piece of copper wire about 12 inches long.

    • 4). Put the water softener against the wall, leaving 36 inches of open space in front of the water softener for easy access. Shut off the water at your water meter and drain your water pipes by opening all of your faucets. This should only take ten minutes.

    • 5). Use a pipe cutter and cut into your cold-water trunk line, which runs prior to any branch lines, and turn the pipe ends towards the water softener. Install a 3/4-inch copper tee in the hard-water line and the softener inlet. At the branch of the copper tee, extend a 3/4-inch riser to the ceiling to provide non-softened water.

    • 6). Connect the remaining copper pipe to the water softener's outlet riser by soldering the fittings. Insert a heat shield pad behind the fittings so you don't burn your wall.

    • 7). Finish connecting the overhead piping and attach it to the wall every four feet with copper clad clamps and screws. Turn the water on. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for sanitizing the softener and adding salt.
