South Carolina is a state that's rich in Civil War and black history. Known for its natural scenery and traditional Southern fare, South Carolina celebrates February, national Black History Month, with many large and small events throughout the state. Sightseeing tours, speaking engagements and other Black History Month events help bring the rich history of black culture alive, bringing it into the present day.

    African American Family History Workshop

    • Spartanburg Community College sponsors an annual African American Family History Workshop. The free event is held in early February in a five-hour Saturday session. The Family History workshop helps people learn how to trace their own roots, which makes the history of Black History Month even more personal. Lunch and snacks are provided during the event. Attendees learn how to use genealogy software, collect oral histories and use the Internet to trace their family history.
