    • 1). Use an air conditioner or dehumidifier in your home, especially during humid summer months. Without enough humidity, dust mites are not able to function properly. They will become dormant and frequently die.

    • 2). Wash bedding and other linens in hot water--about 130 degrees F--on a weekly basis. This will kill existing dust mites and remove their allergy-causing droppings.

    • 3). Cover mattresses and pillows with airtight plastic covers especially made to keep out dust mites. Cover the zippers with duct tape or plastic tape. Finish by covering with sheets or pillowcases.

    • 4). Dust your home regularly, even though it may not be fun. The critters subsist on the skin particles that make up a large portion of the dust in any home. Damp mop as well.

    • 5). Vacuum carpeting and furniture regularly. Wash throw rugs, window coverings, furniture coverings and other fabrics as frequently as possible, especially if you or a loved one suffers asthma or severe allergies.
