Broadway and Off Broadway New York Theater Deal Guide

Much like everything else in New York, theater tickets are quite expensive, retailing for over $100 each. 

Luckily, there are many great sources for discount tickets, allowing you to see Broadway and off-Broadway shows at a fraction of the retail price. 

Here is your guide for cheap seats.

1. TKTS Discount Booths


The best-known way to purchase discounted theater tickets is to visit a TKTS Discount Booth for same-day Broadway and off-Broadway tickets at up to 50% off.  TKTS has three locations in NYC:
  • TKTS Times Square – Broadway and 47th Street
    At this location, you can only purchase tickets for same-day performances, and during matinee hours, you can only purchase tickets for the matinee shows.

    For evening performances – Monday and Wednesday through Sunday: 3pm to 8pm; Tuesday: 2pm to 8pm.

    For matinee performances – Wednesday and Saturday: 10am to 2pm; Sunday: 11am to 3pm.
  • TKTS South Street Seaport – Seaport Marketplace at the corner of Front and John Streets
    Here, you can purchase tickets for same-day evening and next day matinee performances, i.e. Wednesday matinee tickets can be purchased on Tuesday.  You cannot purchase same-day matinee performances at this location.

    Monday through Saturday: 11am to 6pm; Sunday 11am to 4pm.
  • Downtown Brooklyn – 1 MetroTech Center, at the corner of Jay Street and Myrtle Avenue Promenade
    You can also purchase tickets for same-day evening and next day matinee performances at this location.

    Tuesday through Saturday: 11am to 6pm (closed for lunch daily from 3pm to 3:30pm).

2. Theatre Development Fund (TDF) Membership


The Theatre Development Fund (TDF), which operates TKTS, offers a $30 annual membership allowing users to purchase tickets to popular Broadway and off-Broadway shows. 

You may not always score orchestra seats, but you can’t beat the prices, which range from $11 to $39.  You must fall into one of the groups below in order to join:
•    full-time students (high school or above)
•    full-time teachers
•    union members
•    retirees (62 and over)
•    civil service employees
•    staff members of not-for-profit organizations
•    performing arts professionals
•    members of the armed forces or clergyMore »

3. Rush Tickets


Some shows offer General Rush and Lottery Rush tickets, while others offer Student Rush tickets (where students need to show a student ID to get tickets).

These tickets are only available on the day of the performance and, depending on the production, will be sold either when the box office opens or a few hours prior to show time.

You can visit the show’s box office or website to learn more about its Rush Policy.

4. HipTix

HIPTIX is the Roundabout Theatre Company’s low-price ticket initiative created to draw young people to the theater.You must be between 18 and 35 years of age to join.Membership is free, and tickets to all Roundabout performances are $20.Seats are typically located in the mezzanine, but if you prefer orchestra seating, you can upgrade to HIPTIX Gold.You’ll have to pay a $75 annual fee, but tickets remain $20 each.More »

5. BroadwayBox

BroadwayBox shares discounted coupon codes, which are distributed by the show producers.You can purchase these tickets on your preferred date in advance through Ticketmaster or Telecharge online or by phone.More »

6. NYTix

7. Standing Room Only (SRO) Seats


Some Broadway shows offer Standing Room Only tickets, which are relatively inexpensive, but will leave you standing for the entire performance.

SRO tickets are only available for sold-out performances, which can be tricky because it’s nearly impossible to know in advance whether a performance will sell out.These are sold the day of the performance at the box office.
