    • 1). Your first step is to try to determine what the ear issue stems from. Without a vet to look in the ear and tell you, you have to look in and smell ear area. If you see anything that looks like pus or blood, like it or not time to see a Vet.

    • 2). If you get a foul smell and brown waxy substance this very likely is fungus. Ear mites look like coffee grounds and do not have that bad smell.

    • 3). I gently clean as best I can with a cotton swab, and do not push by any means. The second the dog jerks, do not pursue.

    • 4). For mites: use a neem oil on a swab to coat around in the ear. If it is a fungus I have found that using the Monistat cream for vaginal fungus is helpful after cleaning out the ear. Swab a small amount inside the ear or at the entrance of the canal and then rub the ear to distribute.
