Yes, it is possible to make money this way, but it's not a long-lasting strategy.
If you want to really make tons of cash from article marketing, it is important to think about what can maximize your time and effort from writing articles.
Is it sending traffic to affiliate sales pages? Is it sending traffic to a blog where you have Google AdSense ads? Or is it sending visitors to an opt-in page to build your list, and then monetizing that list for years to come? The most profitable model for me is the third model - sending visitors to a page that builds a list.
This way, I can build relationships with my subscribers and create customer loyalty.
If you are directing visitors to an affiliate link, you are sending subscribers and long-term customers over there.
Same if you send visitors to an AdSense ad that directs to another website.
So have a good hard think about article marketing as part of your bigger picture in your home business.
What is the end goal you are trying to accomplish? Are you going to build a subscribers list? Build a buyers list? Create a review site? Create a business plan and work your article promotional strategy around it.
