Health and Fitness in the Great Outdoors
All winter long I have been looking forward to getting out of the gym and doing some of the most natural of exercises; walking.
Yes, I love just walking and taking the time to smell the air and enjoy the view of plants bursting upon the scene and releasing their fragrances.
Deep breathe everyone.
I got a piece of advice on treadmills.
To best emulate an outdoor environment set the incline at two percent.
A better piece of advice would be get out and enjoy the real incline that a hill has to offer.
Get in your interval training, if you'd like to add a bit of a challenge and pick up your pace when you are climbing the hills.
If you're not huffing and puffing when you get to the top, congratulations, you are getting in better shape.
Now pick up the pace a bit more for the next hill.
Don't be a slacker!: ) Of course, you don't have to have a set pace or even try to 'get in some exercise.
' Just enjoy yourself.
See how many different species of birds you can spot or how many different types of flowers you can see.
Document your journey by taking a few photos along the way.
Make it a family activity and actually talk to a human.
Do it in real time, in real life.
We call it communication and the human race has a long history of it, but in 2010 we seem to have lost the ability to do more than superficial chat and tend to rely more on texting and the ever popular instant message.
Guess what? Verbal communication is also "instant.
" Instant feedback can happen as well.
I've spoken before about the need to make a change in your exercise regiment to get the most results and incorporating some enjoyable outdoor activity can help both your fitness level and your emotional attitude.
Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in the winter and seasonal effective disorder (SED) impacts a lot of folks.
Get outside now and enjoy yourself and get some D in your life, and take a few people you love with you.
You'll be glad you did.
