- A foreign correspondent is a journalist who travels to foreign countries to report the news. These correspondents are also sometimes called "on the scene reporters" who contribute newspaper reports, news television programs, or radio broadcasts from abroad. A foreign correspondent often stays in her assigned foreign country, but the news agency may request the journalist to travel to neighboring countries or cities if the situation demands. Speaking a foreign language fluently is a requirement for journalists working abroad.
- Travel writers have a passion for travel and a keen eye for finding great deals, activities, and sights to see. A travel writer may work "freelance," or on a project-by-project basis, independently with or without pay, or through a company, such as a luxury travel publication or an airline magazine. These writers must work long hours to find the best deals, the top hotels, and the ideal points of interest in the country. Writing about travel is hard work, often because of strict deadlines and little money allotted for the project. For example, if a travel writer takes an assignment to write an article or short travel guide on Beirut, Lebanon, she must find nearly every nook and cranny in the country, searching for what the country offers tourists and what to report on --- positive and negative.
- Colleges and universities offer study abroad programs to students interested in studying their field in a foreign country. Study abroad advisors help students make choices about where to travel, how to accomplish their work abroad, and where to live. Advisors may also work with a student's academic advisor to choose ideal programs and courses. For example, a study abroad advisor helping to send a group of students to study ancient Chinese poetry in Beijing, may correspond with academic advisors to ensure the school abroad offers quality programs related to the subject. An advisor may also travel to the country, or countries, to check on the program's quality abroad.
- A travel agent manages and builds her clientele from a travel retail agency or on-line, independently or through a company. A travel agent sells travel related products, packages, sightseeing tours and holiday deals to customers. A travel agency is often sponsored by a number of airlines, hotels, cruise lines or group tourism businesses that sell their products through the agent. Speaking in person, on the phone, through email, or in a chat-box, an agent secures accommodation, transportation, day trips, and group tours for customers. As of 2011, travel agency jobs operating out of small agencies have decreased, due to the Internet. However, a travel agent can own his own business or become a "travel consultant, " an agent with expert knowledge on one particular destination.
