    • 1). Place towels or drop cloths around the floor of the fireplace, which will protect the floor from damage while cleaning.

    • 2). Pour one-half gallon of water into a bucket, along with one-half ounce of chlorine bleach (one-half capful).

    • 3). Pour in the recommended amount of a high-alkaine cleaning product. These can be found with cleaning products in any home improvement or hardware store. Read the package label for water-to-cleaner ratios.

    • 4). Dip a scrub brush in the cleaning solution, and begin scrubbing the fireplace hearth. Continue dipping and scrubbing until the hearth has been cleaned to your liking. Elbow grease and patience will be required for hearths that have received a large amount of buildup over extended periods of use.

    • 5). Wipe the hearth with a cleaning cloth soaked in warm water, as this will collect the loosened residue, along with any remaining cleaning solution that is still on the fireplace.
