Learn How to Get Rid of Squirrels
They are loud, destructive, and, unfortunately, can be difficult to evict from homes and attics.
Squirrels will not only invade homes, but will also eat hundreds of dollars in bird seed from bird feeders.
However, there are a few easy steps that will teach homeowners how to get rid of squirrels.
There are three main species of squirrels that homeowners typically tackle.
These are the gray squirrel, fox squirrel, and the red squirrel.
The grays measures about 16 to 18 inches from nose to tail.
They generally weigh about one pound.
Because they inhabit about two-thirds of the United States, these squirrels are common household pests.
The red fox one is about twice as large as the gray, and can be about 40 inches from nose to tail.
Conversely, the red squirrel is slightly smaller than the gray, and ranges from black to red in color.
Squirrels can be quite a nuisance as they will eat bird food from bird feeders, create holes in attics and other spaces, and even pass ticks or fleas along to household pets.
Luckily, getting rid of squirrels is not impossible.
Homeowners can purchase a weight-sensitive, squirrel-proof feeder than either closes the seed ports or even sends them flying.
In some cases, these feeders may give the them an electric shock.
However, live traps are the best way for getting rid of squirrels that have come inside the home.
Traps should be sturdy steel cages that close when triggered by the weight of the animal.
Peanut butter serves as effective bait.
Once it has been trapped, they can be released somewhere far from the house.
Homeowners should be sure to wear heavy gloves when setting the them free.
Once the squirrel infestation has been taken care of, be sure to find and seal all open areas in the house, including the chimney, to keep the squirrels from returning.
There are also several different repellents that may help homeowners get rid of squirrels, including Squirrel Away, Scoot, Squirrel, Shake Away, and Squirrel B Gone.
These repellents may work better for some squirrel infestations and not others; homeowners should be sure to test out several different strategies.
Some might prove more effective than others.
Don't despair! Getting rid of squirrels, while not particularly easy, is not impossible!
