How to Fix a Clogged Garbage Disposal Without a Plumber's Help
- 1). Turn off the disposal and shine a flashlight into the opening. If you can see the obstruction, reach in and pull it out. Once it has been removed, turn on the water and try the disposal again.
- 2). Insert a broom handle into the drain opening and push it against the impellers. If a piece of bone or plastic is stuck, the force of the broom may be enough to break it. If you can move the impellers with the broom handle, remove the handle and try the disposal.
- 3). Push the red reset button on the front of the disposal can under the sink if the disposal doesn't respond when you turn on the switch.
- 4). Climb under the sink and insert a 1/4-inch Allen key into the socket on the bottom of the disposal can. Turn the key clockwise and counter-clockwise. If the impellers move even a small amount, try the disposal. Moving the impellers incrementally will usually loosen the jam enough for the disposal to develop enough starting torque to operate.
