Problems With Teardrop Trailers
- A teardrop trailer has room for sleeping indoors, but little else. Campers can only access the galley from outside the trailer, which means that they must do all of their cooking outdoors. This is inconvenient during very hot or cold weather, and may be impossible during storms. A related problem is that there is no dining area in a teardrop trailer. If campers must eat inside because of the weather, they will dine on their bed.
- Teardrop trailers can have an air-conditioner, but even a small unit will be oversized for the job and result in far too much cooling. The solution to this problem is to arrange the air-conditioner so that it will not recirculate the cooled air. By using warm air from outside instead of recirculated air, the unit will provide an adequate amount of cooling without making the interior too cold for comfort.
- In the state of California, officials at the Department of Motor Vehicles are unfamiliar with teardrop trailers and may have trouble registering them. Because teardrop trailers are less than 16 feet long, they qualify as "camp trailers" in California. This means owners can register them for a low fee, but this may require explaining the relevant rules to DMV officials.
- Since teardrop trailers are compact, they have limited storage space. This makes them less than ideal for long trips; even bringing back souvenirs from a vacation may be an issue. However, for short trips a teardrop trailer can be ideal since their small size and light weight means they will not lower gas mileage as much as a full-size trailer would.
