South America is an amazing continent to visit, and if you are taking a long term trip in the region there are a variety of garments that you will need to ensure have been packed in your luggage before you begin the journey.

The continent is varied both in terms of its terrain and its climate, so if you are traveling to a variety of destinations, you may need to pack for all seasons. Here are some of the essentials you will need to remember to include in your packing list, and also a few suggestions on the best places to wear each garment.

Your Swimsuit

Whether you are male or female, the attraction of the Atlantic, Caribbean and Pacific oceans, as well as the lakes and rivers on the continent makes swimming one of the most popular activities among travelers.

There are some superb beach destinations where you can make the most of your swimsuit, and there is no doubt that the pristine white sand of Palomino Beach in Colombia is one of the best places on the continent to relax, swim and enjoy the sunshine. The swimsuit will be all you need for the warm water on the beach, while being able to watch the fishermen of the small town gives the area a charming aspect.

Hiking Boots

Whether you are spending the day walking around the sights of a city, or exploring a scenic mountain trail, a good sturdy pair of hiking boots will be very useful, and once they are worn in they can help to avoid the problems of blisters that other footwear can cause during a long day on your feet. The W Trail in the Torres Del Paine National Park is one of the most amazing places to go hiking, and with stunning mountain scenery and beautiful lakes and forests, it is a great way to make good use of those boots.

Sweater

Although many people will think of beaches and the tropical rainforest of the Amazon when they think of South America, there are plenty of places on the continent where a warm sweater is a very pleasant and useful addition to the rucksack.

Located in the Peruvian highlands, the beautiful city of Cajamarca is an amazing place to explore with lovely buildings and some wonderful cuisine, but at over 2,500 meters above sea level, that sweater will certainly come in handy with the cooler climate.

Flip Flops

When it comes to relaxing on the beach, those heavy hiking boots would be far too sweaty, so a pair of flip flops are light and easy to pack, and perfect if you will be relaxing by the pool or stretched out on the beach.

Rio is a city that has a relaxed and vibrant atmosphere, and the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema are a great spot to flaunt those flip flops, with some wonderful sand and great swimming conditions, along with plenty of things going on.

Shorts

A good pair of shorts can be a very flexible part of your wardrobe as you travel, as the warm weather found in many parts of the continent, particularly in the northern countries is ideal for shorts. While beaches may be a big attraction, the stunning jungle of the Peruvian Amazon is another area where shorts are an important part of your traveling wardrobe, although it is important to make sure those legs are covered in plenty of insect repellent!

A Dress

One of the best and most exciting things to enjoy is a night out in an interesting destination, and in many countries in South America, this is a great way to enjoy the culture as well as a good way to unwind.

Bogota is a city that has a vibrant nightlife, and if you are thinking of enjoying a night out, an attractive dress will certainly help you to find a partner to dance the salsa, which is a big part of the city's culture.
