Tysfjord in Norway is a deep fjord dominated by grey granite mountains, aspen woodlands of fragrant pine and birch, combining to give the fjord its distinctive and impressive landscape. Tysfjord is situated in an idyllic landscape in a region where Norway is at its narrowest point.


You can find the fjord south of Narvike and just 6 km from the Swedish border. The Municipality of Tysfjord is named for the five fjords that surround it on three sides before spilling into the sea. The fjord is located in the southern region of Ofoten which also includes the romantic fishing villages of Kjopsvik, Drag, Hundholmen, Korsnes, Musken, Rorvika, Skarberget and Stora.

The Municipality of Tysfjord consists of five fjords shaped by narrow, dramatic, elongated walls of pure granite. The walls were cut by the arctic glaciers masses of the ice age which now carry the swollen streams and rivers of icy water to the mouth of the sea. The "Five Fingers" of fjords at Haukoyfjorden, Indre Tysfjord, Mann Fjord, Grunnfjorden and Hellemofjorden meet at the narrowest point between the countries of Norway and Sweden.

Tysfjord is the deepest fjord in Northern Norway and the second deepest fjord in Norway with depths of almost 900 meters.

The fjord's natural landscape of high steep mountains, deep fjords forests and country side is inhabited with ravens, otters and moose, among many other native animals.

The beautifully contrasting landscape is also home to the biggest and deepest cavern in Northern Europe.

The region around Tysford has approximately 2,000 bilingual inhabitants, who are mostly of Sami population or origin. The museum in Tysfjord details the history of the first inhabitants that came to Divasvuodna and Tysfjord until the present day and reflects the multi-cultural heritage of the area.

Whale and Orca Safari trips are offered here every fall. This is the time when the herrings traditionally travel from Vestfjorden in large schools to spawn in the sea at Tysfjord making it a huge dinner plate for a rich diversity of sea life like the Whale, Orca and Habour Porpoises.

You can also discover rock caves with impressive Stone Age Carvings which are recognized as being the oldest and largest Stone Age carvings ever discovered in Norway. They have been dated back to 9,000 years ago.

While the mountainous landscape around the 5 fjords may not be the location of the highest mountains in Northern Norway, the sheer vertical rise towering almost 2,000 meters from the sea creates the stunning and dramatic backdrop to the sheer enormity of natures forces which have created Norway's miraculous fjords over millenia.

The Most Exciting Things To Do Around the Tysfjord:

Why not climb Norway's national mountain Stetind, which is often referred to as "Gods Anvil"? Stetind is rated as the best climb to do while staying at the fjords in Norway. Take a guided trip up its breathtaking heights and reach the peak at an astounding 1,400 meters above sea level.

Rent a kayak and hit the North Sea, if you're the more active type. Join nature in majestic, chilling, ocean surroundings, take in the amazing sunsets as they sink into the sea and witness firsthand the sea birds and if you're in luck, see the whales in their natural habitat.

Or, take a Nature Safari. Explore a richly diverse, natural wonderland that has been unchanged for hundreds of years. and give you assess to wild life such as elk, swans, reindeer, otters, moose, and elk, indulge your love of photography while breathing in the freshest air in the world. You can also take a Safari to witness the Northern Lights here in fall and spring. The scenic Tysford in Nordland is highly recommended as being one of the very best places in the world to experience this natural theatrical light show. How do you get to the Tysfjord?

The quickest way is by plane. Spectacular views and breathtaking landscapes can be drank in while flying into anyone of the 11 destinations near Tysfjord with connections from over 40 worldwide airports. The nearest regional airports are Harstad-Narvik Airport, Evenes and Bodo Airport in the South.

How about driving? When travelling from the south, for example from Oslo, traveling by car requires going north via the E6 and includes a car ferry trip - however, no ferry journey is necessary when approaching from the North.
