Resumes - How to Develop Meaningful Content

103 7
To develop an effective resume it's important to do a thorough analysis of your past work experience so that you don't underestimate or overlook important aspects of what you can truly contribute to an employer.
For each job that you have held for at least the past ten years, you need to do a thorough job analysis.
A job analysis is done with three main areas in mind; knowledge, skills and abilities.
The best way to go about this is to imagine yourself doing those jobs one at a time and observing yourself as if a third person.
That is, imagine watching yourself on video.
Start from the time you walked into the workplace and observe yourself working throughout the whole day until you leave the workplace.
Naturally this could take some time so you can 'fast forward' and focus on the main tasks you performed.
As you do this, ask the following questions and take notes.
What knowledge did I need to possess in order to for me to complete that task? This may be things like knowledge of particular systems, laws/regulations, policies, processes, concepts.
Otherwise a unique body of information.
What skills did I employ to do that task? Break the task down into minute functions or elements and describe in detail what you were actually doing.
This will reveal a skills set for each task.
What abilities did I employ to do those tasks well? Abilities are usually personal attributes or talents that you have, that allow you to perform tasks well.
For example: The ability to identify potential problems and respond to them in a timely manner.
Remember that every job has inputs and outputs in terms of information and materials.
How did you process these and how did you add value to them and contribute to organizational goals? Bruce H Dowdle B.
