- 1). Choose a spot in your garden that drains well and receives partial sun, ideally morning sun and afternoon shade. In cooler northern climates, hydrangea flowers prefer more sunlight.
- 2). Dig a hole with a hand spade that is slightly larger than the root ball of your hydrangea flower and set the plant into the soil.
- 3). Fill in the hole with the soil you removed and gently pat the surface. You may amend soil with compost to add more nutrients.
- 4). Add several inches of mulch on top of the soil to retain moisture and prevent weeds from sprouting up.
- 5). Water slowly, with warm water, allowing soil to drain.
- 6). Water once every few days during the summer and more frequently during dry spells. In general, keep soil evenly moist.
- 7). Fertilize with a general purpose fertilizer once or twice during the summer. Do not fertilize after August, as this is when the plant begins to go dormant to prepare for winter.
