Art galleries in Memphis
Art galleries in Memphis keep the visual arts scene in Memphis alive and well. The city has art galleries big and small, spread from Downtown’s South Main Historic Arts District to Midtown’s Broad Avenue Arts District, East Memphis and all points between.
There are plenty of art museums in Memphis to experience great works of art. But for those looking for art by local artists as well as works for sale, this list of art galleries in Memphis should have you set.
South Main Historic Arts District
The South Main Historic Arts District is one of Memphis’ great neighborhoods. A former warehouse district, it’s now the location of residential properties, offices, art galleries, restaurants, bars, boutiques and more. The last Friday of every month is the South Main Art Trolley Night. The best thing to do is just walk the street south from Beale Street to the corner of G.E. Patterson Boulevard. Along the way you will see a number of galleries on Main and the side streets, some of which are listed below.
Broad Avenue Arts District
This growing neighborhood features art galleries, boutiques, restaurants and bars, with new businesses opening all the time. This is one of the city's great up-and-coming neighborhoods.
Hyde Gallery at Memphis College of Art
The Memphis College of Art’s graduate school in the South Main Historic Arts District features exhibits monthly by students.
Leadership Memphis Gallery
The Leadership Memphis Gallery at 363 S. Main is a gallery curated by Jay Etkin that features exhibits every month with openings at the monthly Friday Art Trolley Night.
Jay Etkin Gallery
Jay Etkin Gallery in Midtown’s Cooper-Young district features local, regional and international contemporary artists. Etkin has been an art gallery fixture in Memphis for years with galleries in South Main and the Edge district before opening on Cooper Street.
Palladio
The Palladio Group is a small family-owned business offering a collection of shops and galleries in the Cooper-Young district. A wide range of galleries feature local art is in store.
David Lusk Gallery
David Lusk Gallery opened in Memphis in 1995 with the goal of representing a small crowd of talented artists and exposing local clients to art from beyond the Mid-South.
L. Ross Gallery
L. Ross Gallery represents established artists of contemporary expressionism from its location on Sanderlin Avenue in East Memphis.
Fountain Art Gallery
Fountain Art Gallery offers fine art by Mid-South artists from its location at 3092 Poplar Ave. in Midtown near the University of Memphis area.
Art Village Gallery
Art Village Gallery is in the heart of the South Main Historic Arts District at 410 S. Main St. The gallery was started in 1990 on Beale Street. Today, it features artists from Columbia, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Thailand, Zimbabwe and Namibia among others in a community style of artists working and playing together.
T. Clifton Art
T. Clifton Art offers original art and custom framing in the heart of the Broad Avenue Arts District. This cool shop features all sorts of art, not to mention the friendliest large dog in the city.
Jack Robinson
The Jack Robinson Gallery features the work of noted photographer Jack Robinson Jr. While living in New York in the 1960s and ’70s, Robinson captured much of the nation’s social change as reflected by fashion, art, the written word, the stage, silver screen and music. The South Main Historic Arts District gallery regularly is used as an event space. Its five galleries house the rotating works of Robinson as well as art of other artists.
