How to Create a Sonic Boom in AfterEffects
- 1). Film the footage you want to add the sonic boom effect to. Drag the footage file into the 'After Effects' window.
- 2). Move the timeline to the position that you would like to insert the sonic boom.
- 3). Click on the "Layer" menu, followed by "View" and click on "Solid." Ensure the solid color is white. Click on "OK."
- 4). Drag the white solid layer underneath all the other layers.
- 5). Click on the "Mask Tool" icon in the tool bar and select "Elliptical Mask Tool."
- 6). Click on your white solid layer to select it. Double click on the "Elliptical Mask" tool to draw an elliptical oval on the screen. Repeat this procedure to create a second mask.
- 7). Double click on the second mask and drag it to shrink it a small amount. Center it in the middle of the other mask.
- 8). Click on the white solid layer. Click on the drop down menu in the second mask layer and designate "Subtract."
- 9). Check the "3D" box in the white solid layer. Press "W" to rotate the 3D ring and rotate it to a starting position. Drag it to the starting point.

Click on "Scale" in the white solid layer. Press on the stopwatch. Shrink the size of the circle down to a starting size for the sonic boom. Move the timeline to four frames later and scale the size of the circle up again. - 11
Click on the white solid layer. Go to the "Layer" menu. Click on "Pre Compose." Check "Move All Attributes into a New Composition." Type "Sonic Boom" into the text field. Click on "OK." - 12
Double-click on the new composition. Go to "Layer," followed by "New" and select "Solid." Ensure that the color of the solid is black. Click "OK." Drag this under the white solid layer. - 13
Click on your background layer. Right-click and select "Blur and Sharpen." Choose "CC Vector Blur." Click on the "Vector Map" drop down menu and select "Sonic Boom." Drag the size of the vector up in the toolbar. - 14
Save your work and play the video effect to see how it looks.
