- 1). Place a large brick or vehicle tire wedge in front of each front tire to prevent the vehicle from rolling forward.
- 2). Place the vehicle into neutral to allow the drive shaft to move freely. Elevate the back end of the vehicle using a car jack.
- 3). Mark an area of the tire with a piece of chalk. Mark an area of the drive shaft as well. The mark provides a point of reference when counting the revolutions of the tire and the drive shaft.
- 4). Locate the drive shaft of the vehicle. If necessary, use the owner's manual to assist you with this.
- 5). Turn the tire 10 full revolutions while watching the drive shaft. Count the number of revolutions the drive shaft made during the 10 tire revolutions.
- 6). Divide the number of gear shift revolutions by half of the total tire revolutions. The resulting number is the gear ratio for the jeep.
- 7). View this example when making your calculations: If the gear shift made 20 revolutions, and you rotated the tire 10 revolutions, take one-half of the number of tire revolutions, which is five, and divide five into 20 (the number of gear shift revolutions). The result is four. In this instance, the gear ratio is four. Use a calculator, if necessary.
