    • 1). Allow the water stained area to dry completely. If necessary, open windows or point a fan at the water soaked area. Drywall and furniture must be completely free of moisture before you attempt the repair the stain. Make sure the drywall or wood are not warped and are in good shape to be painted.

    • 2). Sand walls and ceilings with medium grit sandpaper. Water can cause wall texture and paint to swell and bubble. Make sure the surface is even and smooth.

    • 3). Apply spackling paste to match the existing finish. Use a putty knife to apply texture according to manufacturer's directions. Wipe off excess with a rag or sponge.

    • 4). Sand the wall lightly with fine grit sandpaper to eliminate any visible seam between the old and new texture.

    • 5). Prime the area with a stain blocking primer to keep the stain from showing through the paint. Use thin, even strokes to avoid brush marks and visible seams.

    • 6). Use a paint brush or roller to patch paint over the water stained area. Slightly overlap the existing paint to avoid seams between old and new paint. Allow paint to dry completely. Stand back from the wall or ceiling to determine if second or third coats are necessary to cover the water stain.
