- 1). Draw a simple geometric outline for your cartoon character. Sketch a light oval for his head and a wider oval for his body. Sketch in the arms and legs in stick figure format. The object at first is to develop the basis of your character. Sketch these elements lightly so you can erase them or cover them up later.
- 2). Concentrate on the hard lines of your cartoon. Cartoons don't have a lot of detail like a realistic sketch of a person might have. The outline of the cartoon is important. The lines should be heavy and dark. These are the lines that will make up your finished cartoon person. If you're drawing a heavyset character, draw a belly that stands out. Consider overemphasizing such features as the eyes, nose and mouth. Don't be afraid to add humorous elements. You might, for instance, sketch a character's tongue hanging out of his mouth or his feet out of proportion to the rest of his body.
- 3). Shape your character based on your initial geometric shapes. Erase the shapes as you develop the outline of your character. If your cartoon is wearing baggy clothes, the baggy clothes will become the outline for your cartoon. Don't worry about trying to capture the body shape beneath the clothing as you might in a realistic sketch. If your cartoon is a clown, sketch a clown costume around initial body sketch, erasing the lines as you develop the final sketch.
- 4). Color your cartoony people. Not all cartoon people need bright colors, but select colors that go with the personality of your cartoon people. For cartoons of a more serious nature, such as superheros, darker colors are appropriate. Brighter colors work better for humorous cartoons. Use single colors for each area you color. Cartoons don't typically require blending colors for shading or texture.
