How to Paint All Weather Treated Lumber

104 12
    • 1). Ask your lumber dealer how long the treated lumber typically sits after treatment, before being sold. If it is less than 6 weeks, allow your lumber to sit for 6 weeks before applying paint. If it is more than 6 weeks, allow the surface to completely dry to the touch. If the material is damp to the touch, allow 48 hours before testing again. Ensure the surface is completely dry.

    • 2). Sand the lumber smooth with a belt sander. This will, in some cases, remove some of the green tint from your lumber. It will not affect the treatment, as the wood was thoroughly soaked in a chemical bath and subjected to pressure to make the chemical penetrate well below the surface.

    • 3). Mix or shake your oil-based primer well. Use a wood paddle to stir it vigorously, or shake the can for at least 2 minutes to ensure proper mixing. Pour a small amount of primer into a disposable plastic paint tray liner to a depth of 1/2 inch. Dip a medium width disposable brush into the primer and apply a coat of primer to the edges of your pieces.

    • 4). Fit a disposable, medium-nap roller cover onto a roller handle and roll it through the primer to cover it completely. Roll a thick coat of primer over the main surface of your lumber working in a "W" pattern to get even coverage. Allow the primer to dry thoroughly, according to the label recommended time.

    • 5). Sand the surface lightly by hand to remove any rough texture that has developed in the primer as it dried. Brush the dust from the face of the lumber with a dry paint brush.

    • 6). Mix and pour semigloss latex paint into a new disposable pan and dip a medium-width, soft-bristle brush into it. Apply a coat of paint to the edges of the lumber. Work to spread as evenly as possible to prevent a thick edge on your paint.

    • 7). Load a roller as before and apply a coat of paint to the main surface, working slowly to prevent bubbles. Spread the paint as evenly as possible to prevent runs and drips. Allow the label recommended drying time between coats. Apply a second coat using the same techniques and allow the paint to cure for 24 hours before using.
