Wineries in Arizona? You Betcha!
Visiting three wineries was enough to make my companions want to take a nap, so they did while I drove about 12 miles down the road to visit nearby Patagonia. We were glad we made the trip.
Patagonia is a small town at an elevation of over 4,000 feet located between the Santa Rita Mountains and the Patagonia Mountains. It has a population of about 1,000. There are some shops and a nice park in town, along with a couple of local bars and a modern high school.
As nice a small town Patagonia is, it is internationally known as a premier bird watching destination. We stopped at the Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve, which is owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy. It is a cottonwood-willow riparian forest and over 290 species of birds have been seen in the area. There are guided tours at the Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve every Saturday morning. We chose to walk the 2.5 mile trail ourselves and just enjoy the beauty of the trail and the surroundings. If you are interested in Arizona bird watching, don't miss Patagonia!
