- 1). Knit a swatch before beginning the project. Your swatch dimensions should include 26 stitches and 36 rows over a 4-inch square in stockinette stitch. If your swatch is knitted to these specifications and using a different measurement, adjust your needles a size up or down to accommodate for your knitting style (loose or tight, respectively).
- 2). Cast on 40 stitches to start the body. Knit in garter stitch for 80 rows and repeat this process twice, so that you have two pieces of garter stitch fabric. Sew in your tails and join the pieces together lengthwise by sewing them together, and then close one end in the same manner. This will form the head and body of your puppy.
- 3). Determine the placement of eyes and nose using a marker, and use the embroidery needle and third skein of yarn to embroider eyes and a triangle-shaped nose (pointing downward). Form an upside-down v with the point meeting the point of the nose, to embroider a mouth.
- 4). Fill your project with stuffing using the open end.
- 5). Sew a running stitch where you desire a neckline using the embroidery needle and body colored yarn. Draw it tight, knotting it and weaving the ends into the knitted fabric. Sew the opening of your project shut to keep in the stuffing.
- 6). Knit four garter stitch rectangles, 3 inches wide and 4 long, and sew the seams together lengthwise to make arms and legs. Weave the tails into the yarn of the knitting to close off each foot, and stuff each leg with cotton batting.
- 7). Sew each stuffed arm and leg into place at desired locations on the body.
- 8). Knit two identical triangles in garter stitch, casting on enough stitches to form a base roughly 2 inches wide and then dropping one stitch on each side for every progressive row. Sew the tails into the base of the triangle, and use another piece of yarn to sew the triangles into appropriate positions on the head to fashion floppy ears.
