Building and DIY are major cost saving ways to increase property value or add comfort that would otherwise not be viable.
Having your own chickens is a really great way to save on the cost of free range eggs and provide some great entertainment value into your life.
What better way to welcome your new livestock than make your own hen house for them to live and be happy in.
The good thing about building a hen house is that it is a lot less difficult than you might possibly initially think, on top of that is the added factor that you will probably be saving yourself a small fortune in doing so.
There are of course certain factors that need to be taken into consideration while constructing such as, security against possible predators while at the same time keeping the hen house off of the ground in order to prevent dampness effecting and rotting the wood from below.
You will find a multitude of designs and plans available to you that cover every aspect of the build, in some cases right down to the best timbers (including used or other materials that will work in some cases) for longevity of the coop so as to save you more money down the road and how to build an ideal chicken house that will require minimum maintenance.
Once materials have been sourced and prepared it can take as little as only half a day to erect, but depending on the design and your skills anything up to three days should be about right.
There is always the option to buy a readymade hen house, but the first obvious thing in doing so is the overall cost that is involved and while it may seem appealing in some cases you can build a much more functional and accommodating facility for the same cost if you do it yourself.
The second factor is that by buying a readymade chicken house it will still be delivered in a flat pack, form which, (A) Means you have to be home for when it arrives, and (B) It will still require you to assemble the whole thing.
So now that we have established that the best way to house your new chickens it should really be just a case of setting aside a possible budget which, may or may not include the actual buying of the chickens.
Your chickens will also be a lot cheaper than possibly expected so think about how many you want the hen house to accommodate before you start any building.
Once everything is done and you have covered every aspect for your chickens health and happiness it is then time for you to actually make your own hen house.
