Breeding Golden Retrievers - Think Twice Before Doing It
Profits
If you've decided to breed your dog and sell the puppies in order to make some quick bucks then you've chosen a wrong type of business. Of course I can't say that breeders make no profit at all, but the cost of breeding the dogs properly is so high that the profits are usually very-very low. And breeding them "improperly" is simply not worth it. So if that's the reason why you want to breed dogs I have to disappoint you.
Selection
And even if you want to do it as a hobby I would still have to warn you about some issues. First of all, breeding Golden Retrievers is about proper selection. It is simply unfair to the breed to produce low quality offspring. So the goal of any reputable breeder is to get the best quality puppies possible. With Golden Retriever being such a popular breed the breeder has plenty of choices for the breeding pair.
Selection includes not only physical appearance of each dog and its compliance with American Kennel Club standards but also their character and behavior. So it is necessary to spend enough time with each candidate to find as much as possible about his or her character and habits. When you find the best male and the best female it's important to get them acquainted and see how they react to each other. Sometimes the female may prove to be unfit. This will require additional work from the breeder.
Health
Proper selection is not only about character and beautiful look but also about health. Without even mentioning health risks for the dame, I'd like to draw your attention to genetic diseases specially hip-dysplasia and cataract that are fairly common in Golden Retrievers. Hip dysplasia is a condition that is close to what we call Arthritis and may be very painful for the dog and even cause lameness and physical restrictions. For this reason you need to have the parents examined by the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) for signs of this disease. The result will be an X-ray based diagnostic protocol that will tell you if the dog is fine. The most cases prove cataract to be treatable, but still you have to perform an eye check for its signs. It's always better to prevent an illness than to cure it.
Puppies' problems
As you go through the selection process your troubles are far from being over! You'll need your puppies and the dame to be checked by a veterinarian that will surely add some cost and of course your food bills will increase. Sometimes the mother refuses to nurse the puppies and then the breeder will have to do feeding for her. It is very time-consuming as well.
It is hard to describe all the difficulties and pitfalls of breeding Golden Retrievers, so if you are firm in your desire you will have to make additional research. Aside from reading books and articles I would strongly recommend that you find a reputable breeder who is willing to share some first hand experience with you. And please remember that becoming a Golden Retriever breeder is a very time and money consuming hobby which will require great effort and commitment from you.
