Journeymen linemen in the bottom 25 percent of the pay scale made $44,340 or less, while the median salary -- those in the middle of the pay scale -- earned a median salary of $58,030. Those in the upper one-fourth of the pay scale earned salaries in excess of $70,450 per year.

According to the BLS, nearly one-half of all journeymen linemen worked in the electrical power and distribution field, making an average salary of $60,520 in 2010. Another one-fourth worked in the utility system construction field, making an average salary of $51,920. Those employed by local government agencies made an average of $56,090, while the highest-paid journeymen linemen worked in the natural gas distribution field, making $79,250 on an annual basis.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that the largest number of these linemen worked in Texas, making an average salary of $46,720 per year in 2010. The highest paid linemen worked in California and Oregon, earning average salaries of $78,390 and $78,190, respectively. Those employed in Florida made $52,520 annually, while those in Pennsylvania brought home $58,220 on an annual basis.
- The job forecast for those wanting to become journeymen linemen appears to be favorable, but only minimally so. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects only 4 percent job growth in this vocation for the period from 2008 to 2018. The growing population and the expansion of cities and suburbs to accommodate that population will necessitate more work for linemen during this period.
