How to Replace a U.K. Student Visa
- 1). Gather your documents. If applying to extend a Tier 4 student visa to undertake a new course, you must have from your school a Confirmation of Accepted Studies and proof of funds to pay your tuition and living expenses. Proof of funds includes school sponsorship letters and bank statements.
- 2). If applying for a new Sponsored Skilled Worker Tier 2 visa or work permit, obtain a certificate of sponsorship from your future employer. The employer must be registered with the UK Border Agency. Gather the CAS and proof of maintenance funds to support yourself in the UK. You must show £800 of available funds in your bank account for at least three consecutive months prior to the application.
- 3). The UK Border Agency also allows switching to a Highly Skilled Worker Tier 1 visa category, which does not require employer sponsorship and will allow you to stay in the U.K. and search for employment. If choosing this type of visa, gather proof of funds (£800 in your bank account for at least three consecutive months) and degree qualification documents such as transcripts and your original degree.
- 4). Take the online points-based system assessment for the respective visa type, and if qualified make the visa application online and pay the visa processing fees. You will then be required to book and attend a biometrics (fingerprinting) appointment.
- 5). Send all documents, including the stamped biometrics letter, to the U.K. Consulate. Processing times vary; prepare for a four- to six-week turnaround.
