- 1). Find a quality guide that shows the various parts of the Western saddle (See Resources section of this article). Keep this guide handy as you look at your own saddle.
- 2). Place your saddle on a sturdy saddle stand. It will be easier to identify the parts if the saddle is sitting on a firm and stable surface.
- 3). Start with the most obvious parts of the saddle, including the saddle horn, the seat and the stirrups. Use your saddle parts resource to identify the remaining parts and learn about what they do.
