How to Replace Automobile Fuses

    • 1). Open the fuse box. The cover of the fuse box has a diagram telling you which fuse belong with which component. Most things on the vehicle are fused, so that in the event of a short in the wiring, the fuse blows. If the fuse did not blow, the wire would heat up and could cause a fire.

    • 2). Touch each side of the fuse with the fuse tester. There is a small dimple in the plastic that has a piece of metal running through it. Make sure the fuse tester probe touches the metal. Depending on the type you have, either the red light will light up or it will make a buzzing sound. If a fuse does not activate the checker on both sides, the fuse is bad.

    • 3). Pull the fuse out of the fuse box using the needle nose pliers. Look through the plastic in the fuse--the metal strip inside should be broken.

    • 4). Replace the fuse with a new fuse of the same amperage. The plastic fuses are color-coded and have a number on them. The number, such as "15," means that it is a 15-amp fuse. Do not put a smaller fuse in, as the component will just blow the fuse. If you put a larger fuse in, it might not blow if damage to the wiring occurs, and may start a fire.
