How to Replace the Water Pump on a 1991 Ford 460

    • 1). Turn the engine off. Do not begin the work until the engine has completely cooled down. Pop the hood of your Ford. Locate the battery. Use a wrench to loosen the clamps that attach each of the battery cables to their terminals. Remove the positive and negative cables from their terminals.

    • 2). Place a drain pan underneath the radiator. Remove the cap off the radiator and drain the coolant into the pan. Reattach the radiator cap. Use a nut driver to remove the bolt that attaches the clamp to the lower hose line. Once the clamp is loosened, remove the hose.

    • 3). Use a wrench to remove the bolt fixed to the drive belt pulley tensioner, then remove the drive belt from the vehicle. Remove the mounting bolts attached to the fan and lift the fan assembly from the vehicle.

    • 4). Remove the lug nut attached to the water pump pulley tensioner with the wrench. Take the water pump belt off. Remove the four mounting bolts fixed to the water pump and lift it from the vehicle.

    • 5). Clean the new gasket with sealer on both sides and on the cylinder block. Place the new water pump in the same position from which you removed the old one and fix in place with the mounting bolts. Tighten the pump to a torque of 18 foot-pounds. Reattach the water pump belt and fix tighten the tensioner with a torque wrench to fix it in place.

    • 6). Reattach the fan and fix the fan belt in place, tightening the tensioner with a torque wrench until it is securely in place. Tighten the tensioner to a torque of 18 foot-pounds. Use the nut driver to tighten the screw on the clamp to fix the lower radiator hose back in place.

    • 7). Place the coolant back in to the radiator. Attach the positive and negative battery cables back on to the battery terminals. Turn on the engine to check that the water pump now works correctly.
