How to Prune a Mimosa
- 1). Cut back long, hanging branches to the leaf bud nearest the desired length of the branch. Use pruning loppers for small branches or a pruning saw for larger branches.
- 2). Trim away any new branches growing along the mimosa trunk beneath the main branches and canopy of the tree. Cut these flush with trunk with a pruning saw or loppers.
- 3). Pull out any suckers that form near the base of the mimosa tree. Grasp these small branches and yank them from the soil as soon as you notice them. These suckers grow into new trunks, which weakens the tree.
- 4). Cut out any dead or broken branches in the canopy of the mimosa. Trim back to the nearest healthy wood.
- 5). Prune out any crossed, rubbing branches inside the canopy. Cut these branches flush with the main branch from which they are growing.
