104 13
    • 1). Check the current requirements to ensure you qualify for the F1 visa. You must prove your intention to leave the US once the study is over, that you can financially support yourself during your stay in the US, and that you can pay for your courses.

    • 2). Apply for admission to a recognized Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certified school. The applicant must be accepted to the program before applying for the visa. The academic institution will issue a generated Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) I-20 upon acceptance. Make a copy of the form to keep for your personal records.

    • 3). Complete the DS-160 Online Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application. Print or save a copy for your records.

    • 4). Pay the Machine Readable Visa (MRV) and SEVIS I-901 fees per the accepted payment methods of the embassy with jurisdiction over your home residence. Make a copy of the receipts for your records.

    • 5). Make an appointment with the embassy that serves your home area.

    • 6). Take the original I-20 form along with the passport size photo, transcripts and diplomas you have earned, standardized test scores, evidence of adequate financial resources to prove that you or your parents are able to provide for your needs during the entire course of study and pay for your courses, and MRV and SEVIS I-901 receipts to the interview.

    • 7). Answer all questions asked by the consular officer truthfully. The consular officer will determine if all qualifications are met and he will then approve, deny, or send the visa application for further processing. The visa, if approved, will be issued before the course of study is to begin. You will be allowed entry into the US no more than 30 days prior to the beginning of the course.
