Army MP Training

Phase I: Orientation and Soldierization

• The first stage of military police training is known as the "Patriot" phase. During this time, soldiers go through orientation, and a process known as "soldierization." During this period, drill sergeants place heavy emphasis on transition from civilian to soldier. This includes learning company policy and standards, and meeting them at all times. According to the USAMPS website, this phase is also about "instilling the Army's values and command philosophy into a soldier's everyday life."
  
  

Phase II: Weapons Training

• During the second stage of training, soldiers will begin working with firearms, on everything from technique to accuracy. This part of training, known as the "Gunfighter" stage, is devoted to the development of soldiers' self-discipline. The drill sergeant gives soldiers more freedom during this phase as well, according to the USAMPS website. Military police candidates will also go through extensive hands-on weapons training, including M16A2 rifle qualification, bayonet assault courses and nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) training.
  
  

Phase III: Individual Tactical Training

• The third phase, known as the "Warrior" stage, is focused on individual tactical training, and giving the soldier even more self-discipline. According to the USAMPS website, this stage increases the amount of leadership roles available to soldiers. The wide variety of exercises include field training, hand grenade practice, an end of cycle test and further weapons training.
  
  

Phase IV: Law and Order Training

• This phase of the overall training is geared at teaching soldiers how to operate as police officers in a military environment. Law and order training takes place in Stem Village, a realistic training grounds with a wide variety of buildings--including a post office, movie theater, prison, homes and a clinic--where trainees practice a variety of exercises and simulations in life-like situations. Here, soldiers will be versed in evidence, search and apprehension, military police reports and forms, directing traffic, interviews and interrogations, and patrol incidents. It's during this phase that you will learn many of the police tactics needed to perform MP duties.
  
  

Phase V: MP Combat Support Operations

• During the fifth, and final, phase, there is even less drill sergeant supervision, and soldiers are given an increasing amount of personal responsibilities. You will continue to perform field training, in 9mm pistol qualifications, Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) and Grenade Launcher (MK19) familiarization and unarmed self-defense. This phase of the training culminates in a "Rites of Passage" ceremony, along with graduation, which is open to friends and family of the newly minted United States Army Military Police.
